Car Hits the Water!
Open the windows! The power windows should still work initially in the water. If not, use a pocketknife, screwdriver, or escape tool to break the window. Wearing your seat belt is imperative as you first have to survive the impact with the water and remain conscious to save yourself.
Unbuckle your seat belt.
Crawl out of the window to the top of your car (like in NASCAR).
Do this immediately.
There are many out there who say to:
“Do not try to open the door until the water has stopped flooding into the car. Initially, the water outside will put pressure on the door of up to 600 pounds a square inch, meaning you won’t be able to open it from the inside. The pressure inside and outside the car should equalize allowing you to open a car door.”
But I say get out while the car is on the surface! Do not let the car fill with water unless you cannot fit out a window!

After getting out, you can try stay on top of your car and ride. Most newer cars actually float for several minutes. Chances are your car will not completely submerge for a long time, and you can wait for help.
In my driver’s side door compartment, I keep a small hammer-like survival tool. It has one pointy end that is designed to break car window. Might be a good investment, but at least have a screwdriver handy.
